Great horses have a way of making it into the right person's life, even against the odds. David Koch almost passed up buying Smarty ... almost. He really didn't need another horse at the time. He really didn't need a stallion. But, something about the little red horse caught his eye and held his focus. After some thought, Dave took the plunge and bought Smarty. David's father ended up buying Smarty's brother "One Smart Sailor" as well. The father and son put their horses in training with Kansas reining trainer Fred Berschauer and the rest, as they say, is history. Dave has not regretted his decision. Smarty has turned out to be an awesome horse, consistently finding his way into Championships and Top Ten lists. He has consistently qualified for the AQHA World Show as well. As a Derby horse, Smarty has proven himself to only get better with age, remaining sound and competitive at seven years old.
